Open for Business

Lyon County Nevada needs to be open for business, actively encouraging development, especially around the massive Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center (TRI) and USA Parkway, and provide the resources for new and existing ventures through its official website, offering support for licensing, permits, and fostering a business-friendly environment.  Our Youth are leaving Lyon County seeking opportunities elsewhere.  Our classrooms are shrinking.  We must grow or die.

Taxable Industries

Streamline Regulations and Licensing

Making it easier to start and run a business within the county can be a significant draw.

  • Simplified Permitting: Creating a "one-stop-shop" or streamlined process for obtaining necessary local licenses and permits.
  • Clear Requirements: Providing clear, accessible information on all local requirements can reduce the burden on new businesses.

Cultivate a Strong Workforce

Businesses need skilled employees. Lyon County can invest in education and training to create an attractive talent pool.

  • Job Training Programs: Partnering with local colleges or trade schools to offer specific training programs that match the needs of targeted industries.
  • Talent Attraction: Highlighting the quality of life, housing options, and amenities in the county to attract skilled workers.

Marketing and Outreach

Lyon County must actively promote our advantages to potential businesses.

  • Economic Development Teams: Employing a dedicated team to proactively reach out to businesses and market the county's unique benefits.
  • Targeted Promotion: Highlighting specific industries where the county has a competitive advantage, such as a strong logistics sector for warehouse operations or specific resources for a particular manufacturing industry.

Change is Coming - We MUST be smart about this Growth

Growth and change in a community are complex topics that affect residents in a myriad of ways, from infrastructure and public services to quality of life and economic opportunities. Being smart about this growth requires a comprehensive approach and engagement from various stakeholders.

Key strategies for managing growth intelligently include:

Strategic Planning and Zoning

  • Comprehensive Plans: Developing and adhering to a long-term comprehensive plan that outlines a vision for the community's future is fundamental. This includes designating areas for residential, commercial, industrial, and open space uses.
  • Smart Growth Principles: Implementing smart growth principles, such as promoting compact, walkable neighborhoods, mixed-use development, and preserving open space, can help manage sprawl and reduce the strain on infrastructure.
  • Zoning Ordinances: Updating and enforcing zoning ordinances to align with the community's vision and encourage sustainable development practices.

Infrastructure and Public Services

  • Infrastructure Investment: Planning for and funding necessary infrastructure upgrades, including roads, public transportation, water systems, and sewage treatment, to keep pace with population growth.
  • Public Services: Ensuring that public services like schools, healthcare facilities, police, and fire departments have the resources and capacity to serve a growing population.

Community Engagement and Economic Development

  • Public Participation: Facilitating robust public participation in the planning process through town halls, workshops, and online forums to ensure that the community's voice is heard and incorporated into decisions.
  • Sustainable Economic Growth: Attracting businesses that provide quality jobs and support the local economy while minimizing negative environmental and social impacts. Diversifying the economic base can also make the community more resilient.
  • Housing Affordability: Addressing the challenge of housing affordability that often accompanies growth by encouraging diverse housing options, including affordable housing units, to ensure people who work in the community can also live there.

Environmental Stewardship

  • Preservation: Protecting natural resources, sensitive ecosystems, and agricultural land  and Water to maintain the community's character and environmental health.
